Loaded maybe - correctly working... hmm.
(I'm also having some other problems with the current OSS emulation
implementation...)

AFAIK 2.4.21 has some improvements added, 2.4.20 has NOT.
But better try using latest (or almost latest, to make sure the version is
known to not have catastrophic effects) 2.5.x kernel. Should be MUCH better
due to MUCH improved scheduling.

e the problem resides in snd_via82xx_pcm_open(), but that function
is much less interesting.

But you're lacking /proc/interrupts output
bit by default for the Sample whateveritis :)

Umm, yeah, that's about 3 changes then.
So which one did it?
(in other words: which part of the driver needs fixing?)

And
x27;m glad it seems to :-)
Could someone commit this change to CVS then?

The
or wiring problem.
Please read the part about crackling sound issues in my driver azt3328.c
Surprisingly, in my case I purchased a newer PCI revision of the PCI168 card
and the crackling simply happened to vanish - most likely the newer
PCI revision of my card now contains a FIFO buffer for DMA. :-))
A
to modify PC Speaker (err: bell) volume ?
If so, then the mixer interface of the intel8x0.c driver for this case
is broken.
Try playing with some other mixer bits/regs instead to check whether this
modifies anything...

Which board/chipset is this ? Maybe VIA or SiS 735 ?
My Aztech PC168 has such crackling sound problems on my ECS K7S5A board
(SiS 735 chip), and the chip has quite a history of DMA transfer issues
with soundcards.
