Try setting alsa device to plughw:0,2 or hw:0,2 when playing. Did it work?

here is the solution I use with the Audigy 2 ZS sound card:
In ~/.asoundrc or asound.conf write only this line
pcm.!default spdif
restart Alsa
Now all the "default sounds" will go to the spdif output.
