Recently, I played with the .asoundrc file a lot, but I'm running into
some problems again and again. The most frequent one is that plugins
don't seem to be compatible to each other. For example, I can't have
anything but a hw device as a slave of a multi device, I can't have a
route device as

I use alsa-lib version 0.9.6 and alsa-driver 0.9.5.
I see that there is a version 0.9.7 available for both, I'll upgrade to
those versions today, but I know that I was using another version before
and upgrading didn't solve the problem.

I've never heard of that error with snd-intel8x0.
What ALSA version are you using? Have the alsa-driver and alsa-lib
I also have these parameters set to "closed":

has nothing to do with it.
Is there a sample file I can get?

I use a Toshiba Tecra 9100, running Gentoo.
Since I got it, I've been trying to install alsa without success. I always get the
following error, with any of the player I try to use:
