Sorry, I wasn't very specific, was I? This is mtx version 1.2.17rel on FreeBSD 4.8. I'm able to talk to both the changer and the drive without any trouble. The issue is that when a tape is in the drive, mtx does not know what tape is there, reporting "Unknown Storage Element". This confuse

I dont know if this would meet your needs, but a suggestion would be to make a mirror of the windows box using cygwin and rsync. rsync has some great exclusion/inclusion features. You could then backup the mirror. We do that here, and it is nice because I only need to run to tape in dire emerg

Is there a way to run amdump in pre-dump mode? Do are the estimates, planner, etc but don't do the actual dump? I have a couple of files systems with are about 10 GB and the tape should hold a native 20 gb and compressed 40gb but planner won't back it up because it is too large. thanks, Bill
