I had the same problem a little while ago and it seemed I was using an
outdated version of tar on the particular client... Maybe you should try
updating tar? It solved my problems...

I had the same problem. It usually occured when I was browsing directories
with long names and/or special characters (usually Windows clients)... I
traced the error back to some file in the Amanda source but I don't know how
to patch it. It crashes when it tries to CHDIR to the specified
