our new Amanda setup using our new Sun StorEdge L8 autochanger is
now working properly. Time to retire the old setup and them old
DDS3 drives, I guess. :-)

Why didn't you just use amrecover? It prompts you to insert the right
tapes in the tape server as needed, without you having to figure it out
yourself.

In principle (unless your tape cycle is too short, or you have too much
incremental data to fit even on one tape) all changed files are
somewhere in the tape cycle.
