Backing up a partition on a Linux 2.2 kernel server gives me the following
output on nearly every backups:

Is this an early 2.4 kernel? There are known (bad) interactions between
early 2.4 kernels and old(er) versions of dump. Either a) upgrade to a
recent kernel and the most recent version

I consistantly get the following error backing up on a Sun client:
db-test.em / lev 0 FAILED [mesg read: Connection reset by peer]
the other disks I backup on the same box work just fine:
