You've apparently told it to use chg-manual in amanda.conf. That's a

John,
Thanks for your advice below (setting changerfile) as I am much further
along, past amlabel and amcheck and up to trying to use amdump.
Amanda seems to thinks i have a tape changer: when i enter "amdump
Dell-Full" I'm told to keep putting in more tapes. Why?
Here i'm simply taking out th
The below got amlabel working, thanks. I'm not done, but i'm making
progress. I'll post another question if i get stuck.
I didn't realize when i started on the Amanda install that i could just use
nfs to mount my second PC, and back up both my PCs at once with tar. Any
reason not to do it thi

The Amanda changers now want to store three "state" files. All the file
names are based on the "changerfile" variable in your amanda.conf.
My guess is you have not set that variable, it's defaulting to

release. Every vendor in the world generates a different output format
and parsing them is next to impossible.
What happens

version of mt, ONLINE is one of the General Status Bits.
Once mt understands your tape drive, chg-manual should start working.
Do you have another version of mt?

Hi. I'm trying to amlabel my Travan5 tape in my Linux 2.2.14-5.0
machine but i get: "insert tape into slot and press return" in a
loop. Taking the tape out and putting it back in doesn't help.
Pressing return just repeats the message.
The exact command i'm using is:
/usr/local/sbin/amlabel Dell
