Hi everybody,
Was wondering if there are any out there that can tell me if a Drake
L-4B amp plays nice on AM?
I have one here that I got from a retired ham and would love to add it
to the AM station I am putting together for those times that a DX-100
signal will do well barefoot.
Any info
Bob...I run an L-7 on AM and drive it at about 30 watts and getting a
solid 300 watts out and peaking about 500 ...Using a rice box to drive
it... Works well... Same amp.

The L4B will work well, mine does. Drive it with no more than about 25W
maximum. This will get you about 250W out (+/-)from the amp, which is more
than enough, and close to the maximum ratings of the tubes.
My L4B has improvements from Harbach and the Heathkit Shop, upgraded power
supplies,

Just something to consider when using a linear amp for AM service...
BTW, I tuned the amp for exactly 1500 watts output, then reduced the
drive to exactly 25 watts without re-tuning the amplifier.

Hi Brian,
That was the direction of my thinking. Thus the question that I posed.
I figured that the efficiency would suffer terribly but did not figure them
to be as bad as the calculations you provided... I guess
I used to get my L4B on AM a lot, driving it with a T4XC. It sounded great,
controlled carrier of co urse. I don't remember the power out but it was
enough to do the job.

The 8877 is a 1500 watt tube, and the plates

Actually the best way is to tune for 1500 watts out and reduce the drive
until the output is 375 watts under carrier conditions. Also if you have
one of those male

I use an Amp Supply LK-500ZB with either a DX-60 OR a TS-930SAT.
Tune for 20W carrier out of rig - tune for MAX CRAX out of Amp.
The LK-500ZB is a pair of 3-500Zs. Been running them for about 8 years,
AND they weren't new to begin with.
They do JUST fine!
I now have two BC-610s, so the

About the use of a linear on AM . . .
Years ago Continental Electronics in Dallas had a series of
screen-modulated AM broadcast transmitters. Their audio
quality was very good but their efficiency was absolutely
terrible. One of the sales guys said that the only way to
run those rigs was to
just got another email from Al Waller. He said to hold off trying to
access either link. Said something is broke and will get back with me
soon.. I'll let everyone know.. Again, sorry for the mix up.

You have to go to eBay and enter the item number in the search field to
see the pictures.
I am not sure, but the transmitter looks like a high power RTTY
transmitter. I can tell you the metering is for almost everything in
it. Can't tell what types of tubes are there, but it is 73 inches
There are photos on ebay. Sorry thats the E place. Item numbers are in my

A few weeks ago, I was one of the instigators of a thread on this list about
finding and eliminating noise.
I have been battling a serious noise from the BC band through 40 meters
since April of last year.
It had been determined that the noise was coming from something in a house

I had the same thing happen in my house. I sounded like a small signal
gas engine running.
At first I blamed it on the neighbor snow blower. I took a am portable
radio and traced it down. Turned out to be a 13 portable tv. It would
not come on. I unplugged it and the noise left. If you want it,
A couple of years ago a friend of mine suddenly had a wide band HF noise
problem. It was found that the TV cable in his neighbor's yard had a broken
shield.
