Hi Don
I also have those R9 ssb articles and have been tempted to see if I could
successfully duplicate it. I have a number open 1920s AF transformers for
rewinding for the filters..To many projects. It might be fun to put a 1933
ssb rig on the air. A mid 30s Radio News has a receiver
Hi Brian
Just saw your email. I have some books from that era so if you haven't got
the info yet let me know.

I put mine behind a 19x8.75 rack panel and had plenty of room for a pwr
sup. But I guess this is not a cabinet.

Well , My 2 cents. I bought a pristine, unmodified 30K1 about 15 years ago
for $300. I take turns with it with other rigs using it from time to time. I
really like it.
Now heres the kicker, I would not pay $4000 for it today, however I would
not sell it for that amount! To much fun restoring old
Yes John
It has sparked my interest also. Actually I have been wanting to get the old
160 m receiver going agn. The one with the 200kc mech digital dial.

I found that the variables in the command set series of transmitters are
very close to straight line frequency. Some years ago I built a variable
osc. using one of those caps and a mechcanical digital counter and was in
within less than .5 khz over a 200khz band (160m). I of course had to do
My 2 cents on the Heyboer folks. They did the rewinding on my Globe King
Mod xfmr and it worked great and price was better than some others. Took
awhile for them to get the info they needed but the end result was good.

Not only do I remember the AV-112 I still use one from time to time on the

I have restored three old northern receivers made in the early 40s. I also
have a northern am transmitter using 807s also from the early 40s which I
have yet to restore.
The three receivers were models 736, 736-E, and N.-600.The 736 has big
airplane dial and also two different nomemclature
I have one and I think there may be quite a few out here that this list may
not indicate. One comment, even though it is functionally the same as tlhe
Hammarlund version of the 274 , I think the sp600 is easier to tune and log
stations as the sx-73 version has such a small dial with the hash
Hi Brian
My semi rural home has all wiring , power, telephone and cable all under
ground. Over the years there have been several been several cases where I
have sustained damage caused by lighting strikes in the area. None at the
house. I purchased a surge protector from the rural elec co-op
Hi Brett
I have been following your posts on the 4D32 project with some interest as I
too had the same idea. Kind of a coincidense.
A few years ago I purchased a couple of mod xfmrs from Fair when the prices
were right. The mod xfmrs were rated at 150 watts with a 2400 z , 350ma
secondary. I

I just saw your request for 30-k1 chokes. I have a couple of NOS National
chokes which look an awful lot like the chokes used in the 30K. They have
five pi sections though, not four.My 30k does have the five section chokes .
I was going to use tlhese on a later project but I have enough

I think cushioning, cushioning, and more cushioning. is the answer. Heavy
duty thick cardboard for the first box and as much cushioning material as
possible between it and the second box. The HT-9 and the first box has to
have some flexibility inside of the outer box. The outer box must be

To answer your question about commercial gear and no equalizing caps, take a
look at the schematic of the little Heathkit AT-1 xmtr from the 50s. I Just
happen to be renovating one this week and the first section of the cap
input filter (two 8 mfd/350v in series) has no equalization. The
Jim ,
I have had this problem one way or another for years ever since I have
started to use the old boat anchors. There are times when my line voltage
is as high as 129 v! This really plays havoc with a rig like the BW 5100.
The bucking xfmr seems to work OK for some other vintage enthusiests in
My experience with the 5100, SN 1309:
When removing the RF module, spade lugs attached to the module have to come
up from the chassis and the shafts through the front panel have to come back
from the panel. This can only be done (in my 5100) by pulling the front
panel away from the chassis about
On the wrinkle paint . I found that VHT makes a nice grey wrinkle paint
which can be found a some autoparts stores ( NAPA and Car-Quest). Platicoat
used to make the grey then discontinued it . The VHT grey is very close to
the SX-23 color.
