Hi All,
Here is a quick AO-16 update. On Sunday I turned AO-16 long enough to
get some telemetry packets. The satellite would remain on for less
than one minute after being commanded on. A quick test of the bent
pipe voice mode repeater was successful. . The hardware watchdog
timer problem is
The AMSAT Office will be closed from Wednesday, October 6 - Monday, October

Sorry for the late notice, but I'll be heading for the DN46 / DN47 grid line
for today's
AO51 pass that rises locally at 04/2258Z, allowing for road conditions of
course.
Cori and I will leave Butte tomorrow and head for the northerly US grids in
DN2x and DN3x.

On the premise that the only dumb question is the one that goes unasked,
here goes.
If I'm building an antenna of circular polarization for use with the birds
what determines if it should be LHCP or RHCP? I've read the ARRL Satellite
Handbook and sort of searched the AMSAT-BB archives but found

Hello all,
please note the upcoming special event on the 16th of October, 2010. I would
like to remind AMSAT-NA and AMSAT-DC members I am still taking volunteers
for this event.
Please contact me directly for details, and any co-ordination for travel to

Hi all,
Today is the 53rd anniversary of Sputnik 1.
By coincidence, instead of its usual
continuous carrier, RS-15 is beeping.

Tom, if you go with just RHCP you should be ok.

Hi Tom-The vague answer is it depends. I have found that different
polarizations are more effective on the same satellite during the same pass at
different times. Why that happens? I have no idea, the answer to that is
out of my pay grade. I have a L R switches and they get used a
Hi Tom,
Is your question:
How do you determine the resulting polarity of the anteanna?
My response: when standing at the rear, does the cork-screw go
clockwise or counter-clockwise as it spirals away from you? That is
the visible difference, if building a helix.
OR
Which polarity
HO-68 is in FM mode, I will put a live audiostream this evening at:
http://www.pa3guo.com/webradio.html
There is approx. a 12 seconds delay.

Africa,Middle East,Europe,NA
18:55...Turn Off
19:35...Turn On--FM/PACSAT
Africa,Middle East,Europe,NA
20:20...Turn Off
Not sure which to pick, but having both is valuable.
For example HO68 is tumbling a lot (looking at my switching between L and RHCP).
AO51 has more stable results: 435.300 vs 435.150 ((I always forget which one is
what).

I'm staying in GN06, will certainly be in FN96/95 .. might be able to do GN05

Perhaps I should have worded my question differently. I understand the
concept of circular polarization and the reasons for it. What I should have
asked was Is one direction preferred over the other for working the
satellites?. Thanks for all the excellent info and I think what I've
learned is

Hi Tom, K0TW
If a satellite transmit RHCP and your antenna is LHCP then you loose almost
20 db on receiving !
As an example VO-52 transmit LHCP on 2 meters toward the ground and if
your antenna is only RHCP polarized your received signal will be very weak.
In addition during the orbit the
I see that the schedule calls for it to be in PBBS mode -- but is it really?
I was seeing all the telemetry frames --
but no PECHO-11, PECHO-12 ..
