I've always used the north star (Polaris) to set my rotor to true North
Carl, an easy way to remember is:
True (Variation, also called declination)
Magnetic (D deviation, compass error) Compass add
west, (or add east going the other way)
Two Virgins Make Dead Company add west
The V is Variation, also called declination M
