I believe with GPL you are aloud to edit it but you still have to provide
the source code for other people with the changes you made.
Personally I wouldn't not like the name to be changed and can only suggest
that you make your own skin for it.

the Emerald 2.0 skin (and the default one) includes a nopic.dat
descriptor file for the nopic.png image.
This is wrong, because nopic.png isn't a "real" display picture, but
just an image to represent an user which hasn't a display picture.
