I still have no luck with Pixel 3a XL loading with AOSP build. I extracted proprietary binaries to my WORKING DIRECTORY and it has created vendor.img, bootloader.img and radio.img. copied all images in out/target/product/bonito folder and fastboot flashall -w .. I ended up with the same
