It's likely not r12 that is the problem but the new platform-tools (ie new aapt) that shipped with 3.2 This is not normal syntax, although aapt has supported it in the past. It is possible (I'm not sure, aapt is handled by the framework team) this is now unsupported. Try changing it to @android:st
