I have formated an 8GB microSD card to a fat32, opened the *cupcake
week-2009-41.tar.gz in WinRar, and excracted the files onto a card from a
Windows platform.
Inserted the card into a FreeRunner, booted from a card, and it said Unable
to read UImage.bin...
Of course not! :) All files were put

If you'd like a GSM SIM card mailed to you to work on this problem, I could
send one via the snail-mail (send me a private message). They are not
expensive here, 3Eu approx.

Regarding the firmware update:
README says:
tested with NOR U-Boot 1.3.2-moko12 (May 9 2008 - 10:28:48)
and with NAND U-Boot 1.3.2-dirty-moko12 (Aug 25 2008 - 00:18:23)
It doen't work with my versions of Uboot and Qi
It would be more than helpful whether I could download 1.3.2-dirty-moko12
Edit:
May 9 2008 - 10:28:48
and
Aug 25 2008 - 00:18:23
are just one more reason to believe that I do NOT need a firmware update...
and that I am going to hit a dead-end with this procedure. I don't see why
OM2008.12 does not need a firmware update...
(sorry about a rant)

When I go to Contacts and then Import Contacts, it shows:No Contacts on
your SIM Card. It does connect to a network with a SIM card (therefore SIM
card is detected).
I am using the newest cupcake release 0.1.1
What should I do ?

It does work for some. Seems to be linked to your type of SIM card. See:

Is there any way to type the contacts into a txt file, save it on a micro
SD, and import the list to Android (or export to another txt file from
Android, for later use), while the bug is being fixed ?

You could use vcardio ( http://andappstore.com/AndroidApplications/apps/109392
) to import and export contacts in vcard-format, if that helps.

Is this actually a bug on Android? Could it be a bug in the firmware of the
GSM network chips?
I know for a fact that this device is sensitive to certain sim cards
(Doesn't work), have you tried the firmware update for GSM?
