While we're speaking of amusing correlations, check out this one. Perhaps
organic food also causes autism? :)

Ohio State University reports up to 1250 bushles of apples per acre obtained in
Washington orchards. See page 9:

The Dean of the College of Agricultre, University of California, reported in
the San Francisco
Melvin N. Westwood, professor emeritus of horticulture at Oregon State
University, states in his classic textbook, Temperate Zone Pomology Physiology
and Culture that under ideal conditions, maximum yields for Apples are 112
MT/ha which is 2081 bushels per acre. See Page 298, Table 11-7. (1
I have noticed a very surprising and useful side affect of painting the lower
tree trunks in my orchards with undiluted white latex paint. I have found this
practice completely eliminates damage caused by rabbits chewing on the trunks.
I'm not sure why this works (perhaps the rabbits in
produced the highest yields while those on M26 and M106 were the
lowest yielding. These data showed that in addition to rootstock, site
(including management) had a major influence on early production.

For those who have high-density orchards, do you find trellising with one wire
at about 9 feet provides sufficient support, if a bamboo stake or the like is
placed at each tree?

, or is the spacing really not that big a
deal? What are the spacings you use for common rootstocks like M106 or G11? Is
there any compelling reason to move towards adopting Cornell's textbook
approach in our orchards?

I'll be very interested to hear how breeding research progresses, Lee. We're
painfully in need of a good HC substitute here in Middle TN. I'd be very
interested to pay you for some scion wood once you release your new varieties
for testing.

as you describe. Perhaps there are
additional factors play here.
