So that was how they did it, I wondered how they (Nokia) could get the
speed up to 14k4 on their GSM phones since the normal maximum is 9k6.

Plug and play is certainly a seperate matter to something being a
winmodem. I guess it is a matter of the computer interface being
software controlled, rather than the modem functions being software
implemented.
