Could you try reinstalling again, this time using the packages strictly off the
CD, then
not syncing until you put a HoldPkg on the kernel and xorg? Then if no
problems arise,
specifically install one and then the other to determine the offending package.
I'd think the results of an lsmod might

problem any longer? And I guess they aren't merged
since the stock kernel doesn't include fbsplash. So
that leads me to ask; is there any particular reason

Thank you very much! That is
if shorewall is the issue here.. i think shorewall's rules block java
apps from accessing (communicating with) the "X server" locally.

Thanks for your reply Vinay,
I've tried disabling Shorewall but it hasn't made a difference for me.
The firewall would explain why Java doesn't load immediately in the
browser, but I don't know why that should affect ControlPanel and
Maple...

Hi,
I tried your suggestion, but without success - hanging of the mouse
or keyboard continues.
I'm convinced that the problem is related to the new kernel,
mkinitrd, and xorg mostly because the hanging occurred as soon as I
performed a pacman update.
I decided to reinstall using the new p
from what i see in the gentoo bugs section.. its a firewall issue..

I can confirm this:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]$ ls -l /sbin/mount.cifs
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 18 Oct 27 02:07 /sbin/mount.cifs ->
/usr/bin/cifsmount

I see what you mean.
But, the 'mnt' dir is in my homefolder, so it should work this way. It
does with smbfs, by the way...

you are missing the / in front of the mnt. mount might think this
Hello kind Arch people,
I have been using CIFS for some time now, because it 'feels' a bit
faster than smbfs and, according to experts, i feel this correctly.
However, since a few days my cifs-mounts have stopped working! I had and
still have no clue as to why this is happening.
Here are the fac

Hello,
I'm having Java problems on my Archlinux installation - there are
three manifestations of the problem:
- Java applets take 3 minutes to start in Firefox.
- Java ControlPanel (/opt/java/jre/bin/ControlPanel on my system)
takes 3 minutes to start
- Maple's Java interface takes 3 minutes to st
