For what it's worth, vmware can also does this if vmware-tools is
installed on the guest. I do this all the time (switching between
fullscreen and non-fullscreen modes)

If you mean the (awful?) grey; Run qtconfig to tweak the QT look and
feel. I was able to make it look quite to my likings.
