and suggests "thresholding" is better (this is a music scanning site).
I have only seen "thresholding" mentioned by Fujitsu in their

We have not had to do anything differently with this scanner that with any
other. We just work from Ariel.

Can you change brightness and contrast from Ariel? Can you change the
dithering from Ariel, or do you have to go into the scanner software?

We have been using an HP ScanJeet 5590 for over a year now with both Ariel and
Odyssey with no problem at all. It works on a TWAIN driver. It's a small
compact scanner that doesn't take up much space. It seems a little slow but it
does the job satisfactorily.
