No. PSTN is 8 kHz and 8 bit. It cannot be 722.

It's basically just a gate. It would only be useful if you compressed
the sound at one end and the expanded it back at the other end.

Not if you want wideband support, since PRIs use an 8KHz sampled channel
and trying to squeeze 16KHz down it just isn't doable. Its pretty much

To allow wideband support to a PSTN gateway it would need to be resampled,
and its not just the small hit of transcoding
a higher audio quality while not suffering a bandwidth hit.

Pardon my ignorance, but what is the big deal about g722? I haven't read up
much on it.

Asterisk 1.4 supports pass-through and recording/playback, so it has
G.722 prompts available as well.

Brian is right about the codec changing over the pstn and likely over many
ITSP's. I would say though, that we have deployed 4 of these phones with our
Asterisk 1.2 system, and while we are not sending G722 to the phone the
quality of the audio and speakerphone during conferences has been

Yeah, I just realized that after reading further. So, the HD quality is
only good for interoffice communications. Cool phone though.

I don't know of anyone supporting this codec. Also the only way to fully
utilize the HD portion of the polycom is to have one on both ends. Your
chances of one of your customers having that phone on the end he is dialing
to is slim especially if it hits the PSTN or gets transcoded along the way.
