In his defense, using third party repos has caused problems for me in
the past when trying to use yum to upgrade from fc* to fc* Now, I
usually have many repos enabled, so I'm not sure which is to blame for
the troubles, but the end result is a multitude of dependency problems.

Yumex is showing me both madwifi and madwifi-ng as upgrades, but only
shows me madwifi-kmdl and madwifi-hal-kmdl as upgrades, without the
madwifi-ng-kmdl and madwifi-ng-hal-kmdl.
does madwifi-ng obsolete or replace madwifi ?

Sorry ... my bad ... because they were the same version as atrpms/fc4 it
didn't switch to the distribution versions.
Using smart allowed a seamless switchover to the distribution packages.
