To be sure you know, though it sounds like you do, dollars are separated from cents by a period. Commas are used just as they are in large numbers, they separate groups of three digits for easier reading.

There are 100 cents in a US dollar which is the first two numbers after the decimal point. Anything after those first two numbers are fractions of a cent, so your $0.1240 means you have 12 cents and almost half a cent or
