You could get some used ATC SCM10A-2s for about £800. Fabulous active
speakers. They also have permanent tough grills on the front if you are
concerned about kids. But they may look a bit modern for a conservatory:

As Greg suggests, most IR remotes will happily bounce a signal off a
white(ish) wall or ceiling and the reflected signal always seems to
have a wider field of view so is less directional.

Just to finish off the thread. I decided to try and see what it'd be
like with the rack facing up the room... and it was not as bad as I'd
thought, mainly as now I can shove it almost up against a side wall
whereas before there was a large gap at the back to accomodate leads,
