Well, exactly my feeling when I got an external DAC to 'improve' the
sound of SB3. All those internet ravings and no difference that I could
hear. Gave it some time, hoping that somewhere somehow sometimes I'll
hear the difference. Never happened, so I sold the DAC, and the hit I
took on price is
I tested the noise floor of the Squeezebox3, the SB3 + Channel Islands
VDA-2 DAC, and the Transporter. Nothing fancy. I just stopped the
music, cranked it up 30 dB from the level I usually use to listen and
put my ear to the tweeter.
SB3 had a very noticeable hum. Actually, it was almost like
I'm running the latest production version...7.3.2. Transporter firmware

what kind of music and is it a good recording, sad fact xx recording
quality on most music these days has gone tits up.
So try it out with something well recorded with clean human voices and
acoustical instruments etc.
The production values even on some music that I realy like is such

Well noise is not that simple, equipment is speced with a relative value
SN ratio, I've never seen an absolute measurement of noise.
So how loud the noise will be in the speaker end is also dependent on
how loud the source is and how the gain structure overall looks like.
For example I would

Hi Phil,
This is interesting. Can you expand on this comment? I currently use a
1m interconnect between my SB3 and PS Audio DataLink III DAC and would
like to understand this concept better. Do I need to buy a longer cable
or am I 'close enough'? Thanks.

Electronic components for the Transporter I'm sure were chosen with
quality in mind. However, new components work best, and in fact with age
and use electronic components degrade and will eventually fall outside
their stated tolerances in terms of performance, which is likely to
affect fidelity,
I too am firmly in the camp that doesn't believe in break-in of solid
state electronics. So don't expect the TP to change. (I did hear a
difference in my TP's sound over the first few days, but firmly believe
it was me breaking in, not the TP :-).
There are many possible explanations for what

SB3+CI DAC was dead silent! I almost wondered if it was actually
connected because it was eerie quiet, even at that volume.
Speculation: is it possible that the CI DAC detects digital silence and
mutes its output?

Thank you all.
Your replies are of great help in further strategising the solution
which probably concludes to buying a digital sound delay device like the
Felston I mentioned earlier.

For those of you who have not yet read the TAS Transporter review here
is a brief summary.
The review was written by TAS' in house digital and computer audio
expert Steven Stone. Like all things TAS it is sorely lacking in the
technical department, such as measurements and a full rundown of all
Really, don't worry about the power supply as it won't make a truly
noticeable improvement in what you can actually hear. By all means do
however, add a DAC. Either save up for one in the future, or look on

It's true that using a digital volume control results in sonic

1. Sonic degradation does not mean audible degradation.
2. Any volume control results in degradation of the signal. The valid

Hi,
Very new to audio systems generally. Wanted to setup a fairly simple
system with Transporter Integrated Amp Speakers
I've heard that balanced interconnects offer the best quality, but I
have not yet seen an integrated amp with anything but unbalanced inputs?
Is there a better solution for

My Classe integrated amp has balanced input. There are some. There are
companies that make all of their amps be balanced.
