I'd also consider active speakers. Personally I think it is the way of
the future - an built-in amp that is utterly optimized to drive the
speakers. The results are pretty amazing with several monitor style
speakers - provided you like a very accurate delivery (with the
occasional drawbacks).

I had a huge stack of all-Sony AV gear and a big Sony 35" TV (crt,
wonderful picture) including Stereo TV tuner, casette desks, Beta VCR,
turntables (bet you didn't know that Sony sold a linear armed
turntable), etc.
I have zero Sony gear in the house

I don't know for sure, but I think its even more general than that. Sony
pressed hard for DSD and it did not get much traction in the industry.

The dirty little secret some "universal" players hide, is that they

The amount of streaming data will be the same, but ALAC takes up a bit
more disk space for stereo files and a *lot* more disk space for mono
material. FLAC seems to do
The new dbpoweramp converter can decode your 20 bit HDCD's to 24bit.
Very nice indeed! The last 4 bits are discarded. I have found the HDCD
sound through the Transporter to be very satisfying when compared to the
16 bit. Ex. Dire Straits hits album in HDCD vs. Brothers in Arms in 16
bit.

I noticed that even cdwow.com - a discount, mainstream, online music

I have bought a good 120 albums this year completing various sides of
my collection.
I didn't but one single CD. Every new puchase was downloaded from
Amazon MP3 and Deutsche Grammophon. I think I bought only 2 CDs in
2008.

In addition to auto-sensing the amplifier will also have to be powerful

inexpensive options are the Audiosource Amp100, Audiosource Amp200, and
the Parasound Zamp v3. I have the Audiosource Amp100 driving two pairs
