scale. I create them with adobe audition. I usually start maybe 100mS
in to catch any pre-ringing.
So, just create a 5 second wav/flac/whatever file with all samples set
to zero except for one, which is set to full scale or 50% full scale or
so.

undeniably true, that if you're comparing a transporter set to
-40dB gain, vs. a transporter set to no gain followed by a 40dB pad
(that passive preamp), and all else being equal -- the passive preamp
(a.k.a. potentiometer) will perform better. But all else is probably
not equal.

Thanks for the feedback everybody.
I definitely notice the oddness of depth with these things, but I
assume that's pretty much par for the course with headphones. If
something it panned to only 1 ear, it images to appear sort of behind
and below my ear lobe.
