Sean,
I have a quick non-technical question for you about the Transporter.
Can you email me at gw...@yahoo.com?
Thanks,
Greg

At home I have two Transporter, one of which is connected directly to
my Cary amp... I am an advocate of the minimalist approach.

, there is reportedly an easy way to rip two-channel 24/96 DVD-A
files and play them back on the Transporter. This could be a good
solution for enjoying hi-res music until downloadable hi-res files or
Blu-ray music disks become available.
--

Apparently there is a new build -- out in the last month -- that
expedites the ripping process.

, which can play
back the full-res lossless files. Anyone tried it? For example A:B
comparison of Redbook and high-res would be quite easy. At the very
least I will have access to the superior mixes on some of these disks.
I'm intrigued.

properly in real-world
situations...especially when none of this is mentioned in the manual.
Trasporter is working great driving both amps.

* Donald Fagan: Morph the Cat (best bass ever?)
* Jack Johnson: last three albums (all audiophikle grade)
* Tim O'Brian: Cornbread Nation (Moses is an excellent test for
imaging)

Be sure to set the PS3 output to two-channel PCM, not bitstream (Dolby
Digital, etc, which can't be decoded by the Transporter.

Thanks for the reply gregeas,
Where on the PS3 can I find the setting for PCM/Bitstream? There is a
whole bunch of menus and sub-menus, I'm not sure where to look.
Also, did you notice a sound improvement by routing the sound through
the TP? Before I had it going
I'm forced to buy attenuators... Kinds wish I had
stuck with the Bryston amp.
Any thoughts from Slimdevices about this?
PS: My USB DAC1, which I just sold, drove the amp directly without hum
as well. I only used it in balanced mode, as the XLR output can be
attenuated.

you lose resolution)

* Removal of rack handles
I will DEFINITELY buy this product... I love the idea of skipping the
analog pre and going straight to the amp...

In short, I think we're heading into the golden age of PC audio... IMO
there is no way that PC-based sources will not eventually surpass the
highest-end CD players, if they haven't already.

Thanks for the input on attenuators.
I do wonder if the benefits (if any) of the balanced connections are
negated by the impact of the attenuators.
I will be trying balanced cables in my multichannel system this week,
so at least I'll have some empirical data...

I have the latest beta firmware, and the switching problems are actually
worse. In fact, I often have to reboot the Transporter to get output, as
opposed to doing a quick power cycle.
I have not experienced the noise burst bug with any firmware,
thankfully.

I've been interested in trying the small PS Audio digital amp:

You can find them used on audiogon for about $600.

album art, so should the
Transporter. I actually love browsing albums covers when I use iTunes
or J River Media Center to play music via my laptop and USB DAC1. All
my music (110 GB of lossless audio) is tagged to include album art. I
can't be the only one.

The 3BSST will replace an Arcam pre and two Arcam monoblocks...

Thanks for the kind offer, Sean. (And sorry for the slow response -- got
swamped at work.)
I had the send the silver Bryston integrated back, so now I can keep
shopping for a black amp to match the Transporter.

-in DAC, so I'm curious
to see how this sounds versus the Transporter analog output, and how it
does converting the Transporter digital output. I might also bring my
USB DAC1 home from work for a three-way test.

Thanks for the response. I've done this in the past with some other
components but I understand that it's not always possible.
Guess I need a silver Transporter...

I just switched to silver components and would like to keep the colors
consistent in my rack, which is in my living room. Anyone want to trade
a perfect black Transporter for a silver one?

I also recommend the Z-amp. Two great features are gain control, so you
can use the top range of the Squeezebox digital volume control, and the
input trigger that automatically switches on the amp when it receives a
signal. I have mine high up on a cabinet, so this is critical...

hear any distinction. I sold the CD33 and ended up
with a Transporter in the system, which *seemed* like a big improvement
over the CD player (no direct comparison).
Anyhow, I agree with the concept that digital sources are tough to
distinguish.

You can do this, by editing the strings subroutine in

Cliveb:
Thanks for the tip. I edited the plugin and changed the input labels.
Now I need to get them to the root level, or somehow delete the unused
options.

gregeas
My main issue with using the Transporter as a digital pre-pro is its
user friendliness for the family -- ideally the digital inputs could be
custom labeled DVD and Cable, etc. I don't have a problem using it
as is, but my wife would.

I'm thinking of removing the pre-amp at some point, but not sure.

Eric,
Are you using balanced cables from Transporter to the amp?
My monoblocks do have balanced inputs but I have never tried them.
PS: I'm using Studio 60 V3s in my multi-channel system and consider
them to be excellent. How do you like the V4s?
--

, and there is something really cool
about downloading a high-quality, fully tagged album directly to your
hard drive and playing it on the Squeezebox or Transporter.
If only more bands did this...

I don't mind ripping a new CD here and there, but going through 300 was
a beating... Getting tags to behave properly was also tough, but I've
finally got a good system.

the Transporter is a great fit in my system.
As a final note, I will say that surfing music and building playlists
on the fly is a huge improvement over swapping CDs. After the
Slimdevices experience, it is nearly impossible to go back to shiny
disks.
--
gregeas
I suspect that if more audiophiles had ripped CD collections, there
would be many, many converts.
