Thanks for the replies. So far, the two 'DAC's' that I've heard that I've been impressed with are the Linn DS units (not cheap!) and the Ayre C5Xe-MP. Maybe there isn't a cheaper way to get equivalent sound. Thanks, JBC -- jbc

. A wireless router would also allow me to use the laptop remotely. In the meantime, I'll rip the CD's and pictures onto a USB drive (all contained within a separate room). I'm sure I'll have to carefully select an appropriate toslink cable to connect the Squeezebox... you know how it is. -- jbc
