I am always surprised by how interpretive these forums are.
Of course Slim Devices and its technologies have evolved -
brilliantly!
The issue is that the overall digital audio ecosystem has evolved more
rapidly - look at all the codecs on different platforms and different
sample types. As you
I had posted in this Forum a while ago about my concerns with Slim
devices, including the Transporter.
IMHO, the slimserver/TP platform is remarkably open compared to most
consumer products. To meet my requirements, I have changed the web and
devices interfaces/menus (CustomBrowse), used my

I am not sure why opinions about audibility are material to any of this
discussion - any more than the quality of your speakers.
If you happen to have the media then you want a player that supports
the media. Yes, no?
I do have some of this media! My point was
if you are scared of the cost of a transporter - go with the
squeezebox.
unless you have *super* audiophile equipment+expectations it will do
nicely.
for the cost of one TP, you can buy almost 6 SBs! ;-)
thats a lot of music for the entire house...

While I am very excited by the idea of the Slim Device products, it has
occurred to me that I may not really need one. It has occurred to me
that I could accomplish the same end by putting my music on a NAS
device, connecting the NAS directly to a DAC,
Mark. You may have hit on the answer to my question.
In reading about NAS devices, I thought I had been told that I could
run ethernet cable directly from the NAS to a router and then from the
router either wirelessly or with ethernet to the Transporter/SB3.
Wouldn't it be the same for any DAC?
I am no expert but I have been told that I can run a lengthy etherenet
cable from the NAS to the DAC. Because of the noise issue you idenitfy,
I plan to put the NAS in my laundry room whether I go Slim Devices or
not.

Which NAS are you looking at that has a digital audio out?
And what interface are you referring to? SlimServer to catalog the
music and SoftSqueeze to play it? Can SoftSqueeze even run on a NAS?
It's not heresy, you can accomplish all this with a PC. But if you
just look on all the

Wouldn't this mean putting the NAS right next to the audio gear, in your
listening area? That would mean cooling fans, spinning hard-drives, etc.
interfering with your listening pleasure, wouldn't it?

I know I'm not going to explain this right, but I'll try, in layman's
terms (sorry, laymen!)
You can't just hook the NAS/router directly into a DAC - you're still
missing the 'soundcard' function that a computer (or the SB3) provides
in translating the digital file (.wav, eg) into a *digital
OK. Makes sense re: the sound card.
Perhaps, I should change the scenario. Other than the ability to use a
NAS, why do I need a Slim Devices product if I can stream music
directly from my PC to a DAC?

The quality you'll get from such a setup will reach from horrible
I can only answer why I chose SB over your scenario, because I was
previously doing more or less what you suggested.
First, for me it was very convenient to have a remote control
interface and a GUI right there in my listening area. I suppose you
could get around this with a handset type device,

You don't.
If all the music is stored on some file server (which you can call a NAS
if you like) you can just

Hey. Thanks for all the great responses. Interesting and I learned a
lot. Great forum, BTW.

Buy a cheap second hand laptop and plug it into a dac or directly in a
receiver and you're done. Foobar, winamp, itunes will be perfect for
this...
But a squeezebox or a transporter is an audio component like a
better cd player not a computer. If you don't mind the audio
component side of the

One other advantage which I didn't hear mentioned, but just occurred
to me. If you are considering both SB3 and transporter, this could
imply that you wish to have them both playing simultaneously at some
times. With SB3/transporter, this is painless -- they can each
simultaneously play
Mitch, I agree. As I have read the responses here, it did occur to me
that the PC/dac option would definitely not work well for two players.
Thanks.
