I'm also a head-fi sicko (in training - been there less than a year),
and I'll second the recommendation of getting a set of Grados.
Definitely try them out.
Granted, the Grado sound isn't for everyone, but you owe it to yourself
to hear them.
I own the RS-1s, but I'm sure their less expensive
I'll cast another vote for Sennheiser. I love my HD-580's, but I'm sure
I'd like the 600's or 650's just as much. Hmm, looks like my 580's just
turned 9 years old. Maybe it's time to upgrade. :-)
I bought Grado SR60's based on many recommendations, but I don't like
them. Maybe the more
I'd go for the Sennheiser 650's (but Stax are better - at a price)
I'd urge you not to use IEM's for long monitoring sessions - they
really aren't designed for that and you need to give your ears lots of
rest to avoid fatigue (and progressive hearing loss)

I agree that IEM are not good for long sessions, because of comfort.
However,
There are certain circumstances encountered in studio environments that
are unlike any domestic situation. Specifically, it is possible to get
unexpected bursts of very high level signals and also runaway acoustic
feedback. These are caused by accidental patching mistakes or even
something as

Nice, but more of a specialty item and not really a bass monster... and
not really all that expensive, but
I have Shure E4-C's for portable use, and a pair of (refurbed) Senn
HD-600's for home use.
I just want to make the point that they're two completely different
beasts. If I could only keep one pair I'd keep the Sennheisers. In
fact when I go camping, I actually take my pair of old Sony
I like all kinds of music really depending on my mood. I'd probably be
listening to hiphop, dnb, jungle mostly but i'd like to be able to
listen to good death metal. And I love my bass =D.

I'm also one of the sickos on www.head-fi.org. Of course, if you go
there, you'll end up spending more than you had planned on
headphones...
Personally, I own the following headphones:
- AKG K1000
- Sennheiser HD580
- Shure E2c
- Shure E4c
The K1000's get most of my home listening time, and the
One thing I'd say about the in ear canal type (shure etc) is that they
take some getting used to in terms of comfort! Now I'm in danger of
starting a war here but I personally didn't rate the sound of the E3's
(which I bought on 'net recommendation after hearing how good they
are).
Could be that

I wouldn't by IEMs for a main headphone. They're more comfortable than
you'd think, but not so comfortable you want to wear them for
significant lengths of time in a daily basis. If you're
I think the Grados sound excellent. You might want to audition
whichever Grado model best fits your budget.

I know you can get some good advice here, but you may also want to go

I proably qualify as one of those sickos...
