My server is a Linux box. Yes it does the decoding on the fly.
I installed mplayer on it to decode the Apple Lossless AAC files. And
instructed the slimserver software to basically decode all Apple AAC
and Apple lossless using mplayer and then send them as FLAC.

If so could you explain how ? My requirements are broadly the same as

Reason I use AAC is so I can use them in Itune and also have Itune as
my ripper. Convenient and quick organisation.
