If you were to 'open' your favorite CD in a waveform editing program, you'd see that most of the waveforms are CLIPPED! It is a known fact that adding 'distortion' makes it sound louder... psychoacoustic mumbo-jumbo starts here! Removing dynamics and pushing the ceiling of 0dBFS (full-scale) is

That CDs might suck because most people are listening to their music via AAC files (iTunes) or MP3s (everything else) and the dynamic range matters less in those realms. I'm guessing that such mastering makes MP3/AAC rips that sound better on computer speakers. -- mrfantasy --Mike
