The ATI amp is better than the smaller receiver amp, so will sound a little better, especially at higher volumes ad/or larger more complicated music or heavy low frequency music. The power supply and output devices of the ATI are more robust than in the HK receiver. But using the SB's built in

Yesterday I tried my SB direct into my Rega power amp (attenuation set at 8), must say it sounded better to me at high volumes ( I now know why :) ). Also, I think my AV amp (pre-outs) looses quality at a certian volume level that I don't really go over, so it was wonderfull to have loud sofa

Thanks SO much for the thoughtful and concise reply richidoo. When I had the HK hooked up I did indeed use the pre-outs into the ATI and THOUGHT I heard a bit of degradation in the highs. Maybe not as much sparkle (now that's an audiophile term) but again the A/B system was not very easy to

Another low cost option you could consider is using a passive preamp or simple attenuators between the SB and your amp. I've heard great things about the Endler attenuators: http://mysite.verizon.net/vze4c5pt/ I decided on the Luminous Audio passive because I wanted a knob. A little more
