One of the greatest piano solo recordings - Rosalyn Tureck playing the
Goldberg Variations.

Here's a review from JS Bach.org:
These performances, recorded at William F. Buckley's estate on Long
Island, were originally released on Albany Records.

you need look no further than Virginia Astley's From Gardens Where We

Lots of good suggestions here. Mine is somewhat different. Look for
anything by the composer Louis Moreau Gottschalk. Several recordings
available at www.ArkivMusic.com
I can't speak to how well
On the classical side, I second the recommendations of
Glenn Gould - Goldberg Variations
Malcom Frager plays Chopin
I would also recommend the RCA Red Seal recordings of Artur Rubinstein
playing Chopin Nocturnes, Ballades, and Waltzes.
On the jazz side, you have to check out Marcus Roberts.

Goldberg Variations - Glenn Gould - 1981 CBS Masterworks by Glenn Gould
Bleurch! His '81 interpretation is awful compared to his earlier 1955
recording. Fairly

Whole album Flac files -- Squeezebox (3) -- direct to Outlaw 7100 amp
using Slimserver Preamp Vol Control -- Monitor Audio S6i
and if you want a LOT of pianos, try :
Six Pianos, by Steve Reich
it requires a little bit of patience :-) but when it ends you suddenly
realize they were playing in a coordinated way... ;-)

Or Richter.
I'll have to dig up some of his recordings.

Hi Sean, most of the really well recorded piano-oriented stuff I can
think of is accompanied. There are a few really nice solo pieces on
Bruce Hornsby's -Spirit Trail-.
The Esbjorn Svensson Trio (EST) is a really excellent piano-centered
jazz trio, with great recordings.

John Stimson
Ah, piano.
Some great stuff has already been mentioned.
On the modern and smooth jazz front, Brian Culbertson is about as sharp
as you can get. Seldom solo, though.
Pieces of a Dream also have some solo pieces, but cross over into RB
with regularity.
On the experimental front, you have Omar

Is it classical music, jazz, pop on piano - if you can pin it down a bit

Una Mattina by Ludovico Einaudi is a beautiful and moving piece of
music. A true piano solo it is one of my favourite pieces; highly
recommended.

Not quite solo piano, but predominately piano in a jazz trio
The new Fiona Apple album, Extraordinary Machine has well recorded
(and played) piano by Ms. Apple. Also, check out Vienna Tang, if you
haven't heard her. She is one of my favorite singer/songwriter/piano
pop musicians.
In the classical genre, one of my favorites is Martha Argerich playing
I also enjoy the fine original work of Clara Ponty (daughter of Jean Luc
Ponty, the famous electric violinist of the 70's).
Start with her eponymous Clara Ponty album, and then consider Embrace
and perhaps Mirror of Truth.

Murray Perahia's version of Goldberg Variations is superbly played and
recorded. This is the version that finally made me understand what they
were all about.

Agree with the Glenn Gould playing Goldberg Variations. This is the
music that made me get Bach. However, do try to get the anniversary
edition called A State of Wonder. It is the most lovingly remastered
and includes both the legendary 1955 mono recording that rocked the
world and the 1981
