I've had great results using an SB3 into a modded Behringer DEQ2496 for
digital eq and as the dac. My mods were done by

The analog output of the DEQ is pro level +4dBu (and +14 if needed)
which is too high for most audiophile preamps. You either have to get
10dB attenuators or a 4:1 isolation transformer (look at Jensen ISOMAX
series).

Hello. I've got the deq2496 and i use it just in digital domain to make
some dcr and sound adjustments, feeding a bel canto dac2. I can't say
it has a bad dac but i personally donĀ“t like how it sounds (not much
detail, poor scene, etc). Most people i know uses deq2496 this way.
As someone has
Why wouldn't you pass signal through DEQ and then to one of the *good*
DAC out there?

Someday I'll probably buy a PS Audio DLIII or Benchmark DAC or
something along those lines.

I did my own I've done a lot of mods on kit in the past though I
tend to upgrade parts rather than wholesale circuit changes.
The basic mods include
damping the case ic's and crystals
fitting better smoothing decoupling and supply caps through out [elna
stargets and pannasonic fc's ]
The actual guts that do the work are often found in more expensive units
...its the ancillaries that they have cut the cost on.
replacing the cheap and nasty caps ..beefing up the case etc just shows
what these bargain basement units can do.
I originally used the src ...as a vehicle to test a
From what I've been able to find, the DEQ2496 uses the AKM AK4393 DAC
chip. Does anyone know what DAC the SqueezeBox3 uses?

Apparently some have a KE version of it, slightly higher spec'd.

I use a modded src rather than the deq but its along the same
route.

What kinds of mods and done by whom?

Anyone know how the DAC in the SqueezeBox3 compares to the one in the

I'm considering using the DEQ2496 as the poor-man's Auto Room-EQ
solution and was planning on running the SqueezeBox's optical output to
the DEQ2496, then
I had a DEQ2496 for a while. While I didn't buy it for the DAC and
didn't put much effort into comparing the SB3 analog out with the
DEQ's, I found it a passable piece of equipment. I'd put them roughly
in the same class, though I might give a slight edge to the SB3.
I ended up selling the DEQ.

... However, back to your original question, I'd think you'd be in about
the same league DAC-wise with the DEQ vs SB3. I ended up finding that I
got more out of a high quality DAC (Lavry DA-10) than I did the
equalization.
Thanks mlsstl!
Ideally I'd like to run the SB3
