After many years of looking I have now encountered two Pawnees that
seem to be the same - but I wouldn't trust them to have identical
electrical systems.
The Pawnee does not require a Flight Manual, presumably because,
amongst other things, Paper never had to produce a Pilot

Oh, no, not at all. I'm sure there's nobody on this list that's been
behind a pawnee when it's run out of fuel.
Ok. Almost nobody.
Hmm.

Hi Mike
I have heard many people say that Piper did not produce any Flight Manuals,
so we do not need to have them aboard. However, I have a copy of an FAA
approved Airplane Flight Manual, dated Oct 12 1962, with revisions up to Oct
1970, produced by Piper for the PA-25-235 model. It carries the
I have seen it happen. A Pawnee tug running out of fuel.
Fortunately he was close enough to glide in to the airfield.

Isn't it a legal requirement that a pilot's operating handbook (or equivalent)
be either in the aircraft, or located at the airfield if the plane is less than
1 hour's flight time?
Refer most recent Civil Aviation Safety Regulations 1998
See:
Parts manuals are available for the Piper Pawnee.
The Feb 1973 parts manual at pages 94 to 106 lays out parts information re
the electrical system including detailing the electrical system drawing
numbers but not including the drawings.

I believe all 3 of our Pawnees have flight manuals, including performance charts

It seems that there is quite a lot of evidence to support the existence of
Flight Manuals - perhaps for all PA25 models. If this is proven then we
should be sure all Pawnee equipped clubs have them on site for their models.
Some might find themselves breached for non-compliance.

What's the basis for the exemption to the requirement to carry a Flight
Manual for glider towing?

The FARs do not apply in Australia (except to US registered aircraft).
Read the list of aeroplanes on the CASA web site for which an
[Australian] Flight Manual - i.e. the POH produced by the
manufacturer - is not required. The PA25 was on that list last time
I looked.
If we are not required to have FMs for PA25s - over the years we got used
to not seeking them - and perhaps that explains why the view that Piper had
not produced FMs became prevalent?

By jingo Wombat, you're right!
Crikey, the more you look into it, the more complicated it becomes! Long live
regulation!
Aircraft exempted a basic aircraft flight manual (AFM), See

And, re AFM supplements, hence gliding towing is a
