If it is assumed the photograph is real can someone explain why the
smoke at the bottom of the picture is blowing away from the water spout,
whilst the ripples on the water indicate the air to be flowing toward
the spout, as would be expected.

This is based on what I have observed by looking at thermals and having seen
waterspouts myself of the Adelaide coast line (I lived on the beachfront for 20
years).
The water is being agitated by the waterspout and throwing up mist and spray
(think of what happens when a thermal is going across
