If it is assumed the photograph is real can someone explain why the smoke at the bottom of the picture is blowing away from the water spout, whilst the ripples on the water indicate the air to be flowing toward the spout, as would be expected. Kevin Roden __

This is based on what I have observed by looking at thermals and having seen waterspouts myself of the Adelaide coast line (I lived on the beachfront for 20 years). The water is being agitated by the waterspout and throwing up mist and spray (think of what happens when a thermal is going across

It is hard to work out what that 'smoke' is but I believe it is the trail from a flare. Smoke as from a chimney is not often seen in the middle of the ocean. The direction of the smoke is simply the direction of the flare which is faster than the wind. What I can't work out is why there woul
