Jesse. The name is definitely Quarenta. Manuel's grandfather already carried that name and in Manuel's fathers baptism even names him as "Quarenta" rather than de "Medeiros Quarenta". Chances are that the name started out as a nickname (alcunha) and was ended up being recorded as a surname
