Gail,
It may be coincidental but I have an ancestor from Sao Jose, Ponta Delgada,
Sao Miguel, Azores who immigrated to the Sandwich Islands in 1883 and his
family with him. Two (2) of the children were "Maria". His name was Jose
de Sousa Vaz Junior, wife Maria do Santo Cristo and their children
"Chapters in this 2011 printing touch on Half Moon Bay founders including
the Ramos, Cunha, Bello, Miller, Gonzales, Miramontes, Brown, Hourcade and
Nunes families."

Wow, I never knew that or at least it wasn’t mentioned when I was there. My
family is from Ribeira Grande. I will check it out!
Thanks.

Pat,
Have you gotten in touch with Suzanne Carreiro from the group? I know that
Suzanne has family history on Carreiro's.
My mother's cousin was married to Evaristo Carreiro who was from Ponta
Delgada, Sao Miguel. I'm not sure if he originated from Ponta Delgada.

Back when Azoreans had huge families many girls would be receive
"Maria" as one of their given names (usually the first), yet go by
their other given name socially. A cousin of mine who immigrated to
California uses "Maria" professionally, but her family and friends all
call her by her middle name
Thanks DanandMaria for the additional information more clues to have to figure
what was going on.

Gail,
There was a family at our school and all 3 girls were Maria, so they went
by Maria Jose, Maria G. and Maria ?. There last name was Gomez.
Many times when a family lost a child, they would repeat the name. One of
my uncles had 2 Manuel's.
In my Grandmother's fmily it looks like the
