Gail, It may be coincidental but I have an ancestor from Sao Jose, Ponta Delgada, Sao Miguel, Azores who immigrated to the Sandwich Islands in 1883 and his family with him. Two (2) of the children were "Maria". His name was Jose de Sousa Vaz Junior, wife Maria do Santo Cristo and their children

Back when Azoreans had huge families many girls would be receive "Maria" as one of their given names (usually the first), yet go by their other given name socially. A cousin of mine who immigrated to California uses "Maria" professionally, but her family and friends all call her by her middle name
