Mary K,
When you say that Rio de Janeiro was listed as the birth place...where did
you see this listed? In his obituary? On something else? Also when you
said you saw it arriving in Boston, you saw that on Ancestry.com? Can you
list the specific date on that so those with Ancestry can take a lo
Interesting but I have never heard of a Rio de Janerio on Sao Miguel. In my
data base I have 3 or 4 references to Rio de Janerio and have always thought
it meant Rio de Janerio in Brazil. One of the records named a church there
which I verified so I know that one is in Brazil. Another record just

Hi João
Slaves came from Africa, particularly from the Portuguese colonies. There are
more slaves in the bigger islands: Terceira and São Miguel and in the richer
families. I don't think there were the sort of abbuse towards slaves that we
see on movies. Many times, the godparents of slaves are people i
The main reason for doing the genealogy of the whole village is trying to find
leads on further research. Santo Amaro is a village where the marriage records
don't go far back. Eventually in the applications to priesthood and
dispensations some leads will be found.

I have ancestors in Norte Grande, but unfortunately I could'nt find many
generations back in time. The family is PEREIRA DA LUZ, they came from Santo

Maria was already married to M.T. Freitas by 1900 so she would not
have shown up in Frank & Rosa's household.

We've seen some references to a Rio de Janeiro -- possibly near Ponta
Garça, São Miguel. This was listed as the birth place for my great
grandfather, though I believe I found his baptism record in Ponta
Garça. We also saw it listed as the place of origin (Rio de Janeiro,
São Miguel) on a list of pa
Thanks for providing this interesting background information. Where
would the slaves have been from? Were slaves more common on some
islands than others?

After finishing the genealogy of Norte Grande, there are some impressions of
the village that I would like to share with the list.
There are two independent communities: Norte Grande and Santo António. It is
like two different villages, who share a common church. The richer people live

Hello Suzanne,
The way it reads to me is: Joam Hienes o Seco.
I would look for other records 1 to 2 years before or after to find other
children but
1) Hienes is probably Enos and
2) o Seco means it is a nickname not a surname. For example Joam Enos
"the dry one".
