Joao is the one who got me Jose's two marriage records, is there a way to
narrow down which number record on the govt site you look at our do you
have to look at each one individually because there's a boat load when
there is a range of several years?

For more options,
Ria,
You need to know the freguesia/village your people came from. There are 70
freguesias on Sao Miguel. You also need at minimum the year your ancestor
was born. The records are either at the archives (over 100 years old) or
at the Civil Registry (under 100 years old) and there are 6 Civil
Cheri,
Some of Ria's ancestors came from Nordeste and if memory serves me
correctly some of your relatives came from Nordeste? She has found one new
listmember cousin, you may very well be another although not with the Mello
surname thus far.

Short on time tonight. Maybe this marriage record may help you add one

Mike,
For the most part, the Portuguese records are unindexed. The few indicies
that I've seen are in the latter 1800s. Guess the priest had the time to
create one. Other than that, you have to go one by one.
There are different strategies on where to research next. I think with

Cheri, can I say holy mother of brain overload. I think I'll work on my grt
grt grandmas family then. Her siblings and her parents and even though I
know their names I'll save her grand parents until I exhaust her immediate
family...

That's a good idea. Try to get used to the handwriting. Depending on the
time period, you might notice that filho legitimo is 1/4 or 1/3 of the
way down, with the baby's name. You'll notice the slant. These letters
are tall in handwriting: f, l, h, l, t. These dangle below: g. So
I don't know about that, back when I went to school studying a 2nd language

Mike, you will get it I put off going thru the records for 15 years because
I was scared of having to decipher the writing and worried that I would not
be a100% sure I had the right couple. But my ex grandmother inlaw (if there
is such a thing HA) is 93, so time was running out.I knew how to read
Unfortunately for me all of my Portuguese family is passed on except for a
cousin who knows less than I do, so i'm left to learning all by research.
But since I first spoke on the phone to Cheri and joined the group I have
learned three times as much as I knew before. I've used Joao for two
Hi all,
I was looking at the NEPS site for info on my ancestors. I was working onMaria

Marcio,
I've been comparing our charts for several hours now. I'm a bit dizzy, but I've
found a number of connections. To make it go faster, I'm listing the numbers of

names to save time):

This is how that phrase reads
