Ria, You need to know the freguesia/village your people came from. There are 70 freguesias on Sao Miguel. You also need at minimum the year your ancestor was born. The records are either at the archives (over 100 years old) or at the Civil Registry (under 100 years old) and there are 6 Civil

Mike, For the most part, the Portuguese records are unindexed. The few indicies that I've seen are in the latter 1800s. Guess the priest had the time to create one. Other than that, you have to go one by one. There are different strategies on where to research next. I think with those new to
