Hi Deb, If the preceding words are Nossa Senhora da + piedade, they are probably referring to the parish of Nossa Senhora da Piedade (Our lady of Piety), located in Ponta Garça, Villa Franco do Campo (or Villa Franca for short) in São Miguel. Here's a link to a photo of the inside:

Altino,   Thanks for the help.  Unfortunately, the only word preceding piedade is born.  Piedade isn't capitalized either.    Everyone else in this family group was born in Sao Mateus, Pico, so I'm inclined to think it isn't a reference to the parish in Sao Miguel.  I will check it out
