There were 3 parishes in Horta, at least through the first half of the 19th century, but by the time the Mormons began collecting records, one parish had disappeared. Does anyone know if there was a fire which destroyed records or if the closure occured otherwise? If just closed, did records

Erin S, I would guess 90% of this list does not speak Portuguese. But I would guess that over half can "read" a document and extract the necessary information out of it. You're going to need to census work, obituary work, naturalization work, etc to find the freguesia (village) of your ancestors
