Tish, It depends. Generally, the genetic genealogists suggest that the X match be AT LEAST 10 cMs on the X chromosome AND you also share DNA on some of the other chromosomes. So if it meets those criteria, it can be used. The X inheritance follows a specific pattern. I'll start with males

if you are a female, an x match to a male means you relate to the match through his mother and it cannot be through your paternal grandfather. An x match to a female means only that you are not related through the match's paternal grandfather and your paternal grandfather... all the other lines
