Here's what I see...
On the 10th of Aug, 1637 baptism of Maria, daughter of Sebastião Ferreira and
Catatina Cabral. Godparents are Antonio da Costa, son of Manuel? Ferreira and
Agada Ferreira, daughter of Gonçalo Ferreira.

Thanks Cheri. I was trying to find an obit for the first Maria.
Maybe they had 2 Maria's.
Thanks- maybe tomorrow I'll find the answer. Is just too cold to think.
(Although I'm not complaining about the Mosteiros records- they're pretty
clear.)

That was some bottle of wine.
The maternal grands are missing. I'd look for a sibling to figure out the
parents and grands.
It says the madrinha is the maternal grandmother, but does not name her.

I would guess Maria (he was looking at the father, Sebastiao, and
inadvertently wrote his name in the margin). The only way to be sure is to
find either the death or the marriage of this baby.

Thank you, Joanne for your information and interest. My asking for "margin
notes" is from seeing them in the marriage records in the churches in the
Azores. I will follow your suggestions and hopefully my last connection for
this family will be a positive result.
Again, thanks, Celeste
Celeste,
I work for the Catholic Church and the information you are seeking would
probably not be found as a margin note (though stranger things have
happened) in the marriage register but will show up in the pre-nuptual
paperwork that every couple has to provide before the marriage can take
Cheri,
On my first visit to Lomba da Santa Barbara, I asked about confession rolls.
I was told that they had been destroyed when the new church was built. The
site of the old church is some kind of "center." I talked with a lady that
took care of the "books" etc. for the church and she

The church where MC was married is St. Mary's in Bristol, RI. I have a "form"

Indices in which particular records? The stand alone indices like the ones
in Vila Franca and Ponta Garca? The indices in the back of the book like in
Ribeira das Tainhas? All three are done differently. Some are chronological
by date, some are by name, generally first. The headers at the top of
Can anyone here please explain how do you use the indices to find someone
in the records. Do you look for the first or last name.

Julio,
What is your evidence that this Maria, born in 1868 is the same Maria that
Celeste is looking for in 1884? How do you know that she died in California
in 1970? This would make her 102 and Celeste mentioned nothing about that.
Thanks, Cheri
