Louie, that's another reason to get the Basic Portuguese Paleography
booklet I talked about in class on Saturday. Some of those capital letters
are so different than what we see today you wouldn't recognize them!

Thanks Cheri! I see what you mean about going back and looking at things.

If you read all the posts where people ask for translation help, whether
it's your island & freguesia or not, you will develop more of a sense for

I see it now. I wanted to make the first letter a "D" and it kinda looked

Nope- I see "Clara." Look at the opposite page where he write the letter "C" in

Lordello is a noble name. In the early days the King sent many nobles to
help settle the islands. Many of the St Maria names are from mainland
nobles. It appears many went to St Maria first then to Sao Miguel and other
places, such as Terceira, which is the administrative centre for the
By the way... with the help of some of your suggestions made to me after my
initial post in this thread I'm almost certain that I've found the marriage
record of the parents of the child.
For those that are interested here is the link.
George, I've never seen it on Sao Jorge but it may have just passed me by
in my searching.

Santo Espirito (Santa Maria). I'm not sure how common it is elsewhere in
the Azores. I've not seen that name in Faial da Terra, Sao Miguel. The only
other Azorean parish that I'm researching. I'm curious if that name shows

It appears to be the name or surname Lordello. I read on a google search that
the surname is concentrated in Brazil with few people having this surname
around the world. I read that about 2426 people were found to bear the surname
Lordello. Maybe you know this about the surname but I thought
