Each council (county) has one Matriz or Mother Church. Some large concelhos (councils) have 2 (that's only on Sao Miguel island though). Santa Maria = 1 Sao Miguel = 8 Terceira = 2 (sorta - one is really the Cathedral or the Diocese seat) Graciosa = 1 Sao Jorge = 2 Pico = 3 Faial = 1 Flores = 2

Perhaps you are right. But it is strange that in Emilia's baptism of 1873 the priest says Antonio da Silva parents are also Incognitos and that Helena Rosa is viuva. But if she was married to Antonio Silva who died in 1874 after Emilia was born, why would priest say she is viuva in the 1873

João Ventura, archivist, told us that many of the expostos were baptized at the various Matriz'. Bretanha belongs to Ponta Delgada and the Matriz in Ponta Delgada is São Sebastião. That's on the other side of the island. I do see Ribeira Grande mentioned in your document. That's on the north coast
