Pat, that's great but verify all! Bettencourt is spelled this way. Just remember that most of our people were illiterate and didn't know how to spell, the Census taker didn't have a clue how to spell the name and the priests of the Azores spelled and abbreviated at will! I have tons of Bettencourts

I wouldn't rely on the census for correct spelling. If the person being interviewed was illiterate they may not have known how to spell their name. Then it was up to the census taker to sound it out, sometimes from a heavy accent! Even the records in the Azores have different spellings for some nam
